Garland of Hours: News

New Press - April 7, 2008

new projects - September 4, 2007

Garland of Hours is contributing a track for the Black Arrow Press book/cd titled Where's My Halo?
It's five stories from "Santi: Lives of Modern Saints" with original soundtracks by American and European bands. A new adventure in language and sound. A co-production between Black Arrow and Freefolk Records.

The Soundest Serum on iTunes - June 21, 2007

The new record is now available for download on iTunes here!

CD Release Show May 15 2007 - April 16, 2007

So the cd release show for The Soundest Serum (Noble Task Records) is Tuesday May 15 at the Black Cat. Benjy Ferree is gonna play some tunes solo before the band. The band this time (its always a surprise, isn't it?) is Mary Timony, guitar and Jonah Takagi, bass and Trip Gray (Tsunami/Ida/Glorytellers) on drums. The album, in addition to being available here, will also be distributed thru Dischord
In other news, I've been getting around cello-wise with a few friends who were recording lately. Among the fruits of these labors are Mary Timony's "The Shapes We Make" album out on Kill Rock Stars,
Get Him Eat Him's "Arms Down" out June 5 on Absolutely Kosher, and Bob Mould's new record as well. Oh and the great Sounds of Kaleidoscope too!
Now off to Europe with the Benjy Ferree experience.

Release date May 22 2007 - March 4, 2007

The second Garland of Hours album, "The Soundest Serum", will be released May 22 2007 on Noble Task Records. Available thru iTunes, CDBaby, and at finer independent music stores. Amen.

lot 63, grave c - March 6, 2006

My friend Sam Green just sent me a copy of his new short film "lot 63, grave c" about the murder which occurred at the Stones' Altamont Freeway concert in 1969. It was just shown at Sundance and is also appearing at other festivals this year. Dave Cerf and I have some music featured in the film..... here is a link to a pretty cool interview with Sam at othercinema.com

Almost Done - February 22, 2006

So I'm finishing up the final recording on the album. The gracious Mary Timony is adding some silky guitar to a couple songs. Brendan Canty is going to mix it and add other magical touches, as he is wont to do.The songs are (I think) surprisingly rockin' and feature as much cello as piano this time. I hope to start doing live shows again in April and May!

Finally Recording! - December 12, 2005

So I'm unofficially making my new record at Blindspot Studios here in DC. This is the name that Brendan gave the practice/recording space that I've been talking about since July..... it's nice to finally get some new songs down after so long. Also, come check out the Rock and Shop at the Black Cat this Sunday the 18th if you're in DC. I'll be hawking some fine hand-crocheted wares!

Bob Mould at the Birchmere - November 21, 2005

Hey, I'm playing cello with Bob Mould at his upcoming show at the Birchmere on Tues. Nov. 29. See you there!

I just finished up playing with Brandon on tour, we were opening for Ted Leo and it was great fun, although there's not much to eat down south that's not fried....

Approaching Autumn - September 9, 2005

The air is turning crisp, the air-conditioner is turned off.... that strange wistful smell of old leaves....
always my favorite time of year. I've been so busy teaching, it's very inspiring to work with these kids. I love teaching because I am constantly learning just as much as they are!
I'm also still plugging away at recording this new album. Re-learning ProTools has been an adventure but Brandon and I are making progress and not trying to bug Brendan with questions while he's on tour with Bob Mould in Europe. I'm playing a hurricane victims' benefit show at La Casa in Mt. Pleasant on Sept. 17, check out the tour page for details.

moving - July 10, 2005

hi people,
back from the west coast shows and moving after 8 years in the same house. gentrification, I guess it's more like re-gentrification of the more posh peoples coming into my neighborhood. Anyway, I've been listening to the new record by Scout Niblett and like it alot.

Tour and New Studio - June 4, 2005

I'm sharing a new practice space/recording studio with Brendan Canty and Brandon Butler in Takoma Park.... i'm hoping to record a bunch in July when we get back from our little west coast jaunt. Seattle, Portland, San Fran, LA, San Diego, headed your way starting June 27!
